The course introduces the research field of environmental history. It focuses on the merits of historical approaches in relation to contemporary environmental issues and the wider research field of environmental humanities. Thereby, the course discusses examples of environmental history research to analyze contemporary challenges like air pollution, climate change, and loss of biological diversity. Additionally, it discusses environmental history research to analyze the development of “environment,” “sustainability,” “Anthropocene,” and other key-concepts in the environmental debate.
