This course give an overview of various forms of violence in different global contexts: rape, intimate partner violence, rape as a weapon in war, honor related violence, militarizm, child sexual abuse, female genital mutilation, self harm, prostitution and trafficking. The overall aim is to explore and problematize the connection between gender, violence and culture. It promotes a critical attitude towards how violence is described and explained in science, politics and in the media. It also gives an understanding of how conceptions of gender and cultural affect how we understand, explain and deal with violence in different communities.
