My dissertation, titled Resolutions: Informational aesthetics and techno-politics in contemporary art, critically examines the use of computational data visualisation as an artistic tool by contemporary artists. The dissertation examines the use of computational data in art through the lens of resolution--both as in image resolution and political resolution--and autonomy--both in terms of artistic autonomy, and machinic autonomy. Through this theoretical trajectory, the dissertation engages in a comparative analysis of selected artistic case studies, including works by contemporary artists Forensic Architecture and Lap See Lam, both of whom utilise computational data as their primary artistic medium. The thesis thus proposes a reconsideration of aesthetic notions of artistic autonomy and art's claims to knowledge within the context of today's information society.
