Maria H. Oen (Ph.D., University of Oslo, 2015) is Senior Lecturer of Art History and Visual Studies. Her research considers visual culture in medieval and early modern Europe. Currently, she is investigating the visual strategies with which the literary authority of female writers was shaped and legitimized on the Italian peninsula (ca. 1350–1650). In previous projects, Oen has explored subjects such as the visual rhetoric of the Italian manuscripts containing Birgitta of Sweden’s Revelations, the role of art and architecture in relation to late medieval visionary culture, and the relationship between art and knowledge in the Middle Ages. Before joining the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences at Lund University in 2024, Oen has been Deputy Director of the Swedish Institute for Classical Studies in Rome, Visiting Professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Visiting Scholar at The Warburg Institute, and Marie Curie Fellow at the Centre for Medieval Studies, Stockholm University
