This article discusses the belief that technological development, specifically digitization, is a natural force that is unstoppable and that mankind must adjust to in the most beneficial way. Drawing from conclusion of our previous empirical studies of the impact on socioeconomically vulnerable groups in the transition into a digitised payment market, the article questions the clash between (positive) deterministic ideas about a technological future and humanitarian values.
