Musicology and Inter media studies research seminars: Feminism in the popular music industries
Presented by Ann Werner
In the 2010’s feminism became commonplace in mainstream popular music (James 2015). This trend could be seen in lyrics and music videos, and in artists’ public personas and political statements (Halberstam 2012). The music industry has also made multiple efforts to increase gender equality in music participation in 2000’s, and research in the field has been growing (Raine & Strong 2019). While the feminist public discourse in popular music has weakened since then many of the ideas that were underpinning and problematizing the lack of equality, diversity and inclusivity in poplar music live on.
This presentation investigates the feminist influences on the music industry in the 2000’s. That is: how the industry has attempted to make change in accordance with feminist and anti-racist ideas. What feminist ideas have mainly been brought forward, how is gender understood and what methods are used for achieving change? It draws on conclusions from Feminism and gender politics in mediated popular music (Werner 2022). Further, the presentation introduces examples of feminism in the music industry highlighting the focus on numerical representation, sexual harassment and intersectional perspectives on inequalities. In the presentation I analyze the understandings of gender and power that have been informing feminist work for change in the popular music industries.
